Pre-seed, pre-website, pre-almost-everything. We built the positioning and the site in parallel, in three weeks, because the first sales calls were already on the calendar.
How it went
The client name is withheld under engagement terms. Everything else is real: the problem, what we did, and what changed.
The work
Two co-founders, an eleven-slide pitch deck they were tired of looking at, and ten discovery calls already on the calendar before there was a website, a logo, or a settled answer to 'what do you actually do' that didn't take four minutes to say.
Normally positioning comes first and the site follows once the thinking is settled. There was no time for 'normally'. The first call was twelve days out, so we ran both at once, which meant every positioning decision had to survive being turned into a real page within the same week it was made.
The forcing function turned out to be useful. Positioning work done in a vacuum tends to drift toward what sounds impressive in a room. Positioning work done against an actual site build gets caught the moment a sentence can't be turned into a headline that means anything to a buyer.
We sat in on two of the founders' calls before writing anything, specifically to steal the actual questions prospects asked, not the questions the founders assumed they'd ask. Three of the five site sections exist because of a question that came up on a call, not because it was in a content plan.
The site shipped in three weeks: positioning, copy, design, and build, with the founders reviewing pages the same day they were built rather than in a single review round at the end.
By the tenth call, the founders were sending the site before the meeting instead of promising a deck after it. Prospects were showing up having already read the pricing page, which changed what the calls were even for.
Nothing here was clever. Short timelines are fine to work inside. Unclear ones are the actual problem, and the fix for that is sitting close enough to the real questions that the work can't drift.
